Taking Accountability

written by Elsie R

How many of us can honestly say that accountability is NEEDED.

What is accountability?

-It simply means to be responsible for your actions

I have personally been in situations where I have done someone wrong or slightly hurt their feelings. Instead of acknowledging what I did wrong, I would try to start a conversation with them not knowing I have offended them in some way. I didn't realize until later that this would cause people to be super uncomfortable and standoffish. With some prayer and self reflection, I knew I had to take accountability and apologize.

There are 3 steps I had to take before reaching the point of self-awareness in my life

  1. Acknowledge

Psalm 51:3 - "For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sins is always before me."

Take a step back and examine your current condition. Ask yourself, "Why is this person so distant?"

  2. Admit

1 John 1:9- "If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

This involves being humble. Many of the times we become too prideful and don't want to admit that we have made a mistake.

Proverbs 11:2 - When pride comes then comes shame, but with the humble is wisdom

Even though you may feel embarrassed to admit your faults, this part isn't about you. You made this about the other person when you did them dirty.

  3. Ask for forgiveness

Ephesians 4:32- "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God in Christ forgave you."

    Forgiveness is needed

    Forgiveness brings peace

To conclude take accountability, have self-awareness and just be kind. The lord wants great for you. You cannot expect to be treated with care if you lack that for others and yourself.
