The Power of Prayer and Fasting

Written by Elsie Revange

I went on 3 day fast recently, and on the first day, I received 3 main keys on how powerful prayer and fasting are. If you ever feel like you are under a spiritual attack, think about these 3 keys when you start praying and fasting.

1) Fight battles on a different level

  • Mark 9:29 (KJV)- “And he said unto them, this kind can come forth by nothing, but prayer and fasting."

A little back story: Jesus' disciples were out healing people, and this one individual had a demon inside of him. The disciples tried to cast out the demon but could not do it. Jesus had to step in and do it himself. Now the disciples were asking Jesus why they weren’t able to cast out the demon, and Jesus responded with because this particular type of casting out required a different level of anointing. Have you ever been in a battle and sensed that this particular battle was something different? If so, then you might be battling spiritual warfare. In other words, most of the time, spiritual warfare can only be defeated by prayer and fasting.

2) Act of surrender

Fasting means abstaining from all or some types of foods. When fasting, you are surrendering (giving up) what your flesh craves so that you can strengthen your spirit. Galatians 5 talks about how we should live by the spirit.

  • Galatians 5:16-17 (NIV)- “So I say walk by the spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the spirit, and the spirit what is contrary to the flesh”.

This act of surrendering expresses that you need God to save you from whatever is harming or draining you.

3) Clarity

During prayer and fasting, you are seeking the Father. When you seek the Father, he gives you directions and instructions on where to go. With these two things, you will find yourself walking into the calling God has called you to be. Once you receive clarity on where you need to go or be, you will find your purpose. This is why the devil doesn’t want to spend time with God, nor pray and fast.
